According to the American Humanist Association, the United States is home to millions of people of strong moral character who do not believe in God. The atheist organization has run public information campaigns in the past, attempting to convince Americans that “you don’t need a god to be a good person.”
“This year, we’re going further,” the association says, “in our attempt to challenge the intolerant view that atheist and agnostic humanists can’t be good without Bible derived morality.”
The campaign ads feature two sections–the first quotes a religious text, pulled out of its biblical context; the second features a humanist principle taken from a humanist document, such as Humanism and its Aspirations. Contrasting notable humanist quotes with verses from the Old Testament, New Testament, and Quran, the ads illuminate humanist thought and encourage Americans to “consider humanism.”
On November 12, television commercials will air nationwide on Dateline NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, and Bloomberg Business Television. Newspaper ads will appear in several major newspapers, including USA Today, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Seattle Times, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and New York’s The Village Voice. The Progressive, a left-wing magazine, and Reason, a libertarian publication, will also feature ads.

Obviously, the Taurus-Civic-Prius example is a simplified one, but important information can be gleaned from it. The first is that if saving the most money possible is your priority, then it is most financially viable to take the car that you own to the end of its useful life (before purchasing major rebuilds and repairs) before buying a new vehicle. The logical extension of this is that the natural depreciation of vehicles makes it infinitely worth your while to buy quality used cars. Also important is that there are many other costs associated with a vehicle other than fuel, and not every American is a travelling salesman. In the end, if you put a little extra care into driving, maintaining, and buying your vehicles, you can save thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars over the vehicle’s lifetime.
